Edentiti wins Novay Digital Identity Award!

Edentiti has received some fantastic news this morning! We're proud to announce that we have won the Identity.Next’11 conference's Novay Digital Identity Award for the best new concept or product in the field of digital identity. This award was presented to us via Skype from the conference in The Hague, Netherlands.

The competition was world class, which makes this even more of an honour for us. Here are some snippets from the press release:

What the jury found particularly appealing about Edentiti is the efficient  and innovative manner in which they rely on existing online identities that a  user has, and use these as a basis for identity proofing for new online  services.

Hermen van der Lugt, director of research institute Novay and chairman of the jury: “It is easier for end-users and less expensive for online businesses than  traditional face-to-face identity verification approaches. Additionally, Edentiti lets the individual control the whole process of identity  verification, which is a big plus, considering the privacy /sensitivity.”

Thanks to the fantastic support of our customers, family and friends, our City2Surf team raised $865 for Cystic Fibrosis Australia! This surpassed our goal of $500 and we're very humbled by the support we received. The whole team finished the run in one piece too, so a good result all round.

User-testing the new single-screen user interface

In late 2010 an Edentiti customer, RentSmart, requested that the Edentiti user interface be modified to allow the ID verification process to be completed on a single webpage. The then-current UI for ID verification presented the user with a list of identification sources, each linking to separate webpages on which the customer would input their identity details.

RentSmart had a very specific application for the Edentiti system because their user-base was counter staff at electrical retail stores who were completing ID verification with customers. These users had to complete the process on a variety of hardware and software platforms, including older computers or small monitors and sometimes with Internet Explorer 6 as the browser. These technological barriers, along with the hectic nature of a retail environment had RentSmart concerned about drop-out rates if the user interface remained as it was.

We developed a proposed interface mockup and presented it to RentSmart. Over a couple of weeks, RentSmart’s requested design iterations slowly simplified our original proposal significantly, often due to technological and legacy system constraints. By the time the designs were approved to build, we had a bare-bones, no-nonsense model, fit for RentSmart’s purpose.

Previous to all this, we’d already been thinking about moving to a single screen UI. After building RentSmart’s UI, we considered simply moving forward with this model, but we were asking ourselves how much of the simplification was due to RentSmart’s constraints and how much was simply stripping away unnecessary complexity. In order to establish the best model with which to move forward for other Edentiti customers, we decided to undertake some user-testing research on RentSmart’s simplified version and the original, more feature-rich proposal.

The screens

The simple version

The simple version required users to select an identification source from a list on the left, at which time the source would appear on the right of screen. The user would then input details and complete the source on the right side of the screen before moving on to select another source from the left until verification was complete.

This version was, in essence, our existing screens compressed into a single screen with a 2-column layout.

The tabbed version

The tabbed version allowed interaction as per the simple version above. It also offered an alternative flow, whereby the user could select more than one source (using checkboxes) from the list on the left before completing any identification sources. As the sources were selected on the left, they would appear on the right in separate tabs. Upon selecting enough sources on the left to potentially verify the user, an alert let them know they should start completing the sources. The user could then complete each tab on the right in any order until verification was achieved, or deselect any source and select another.

The reasoning behind allowing multiple source selection before source completion was to help a customer (or retail clerk) understand that they had enough ID on them to (potentially) complete the process before bothering to input any personal details.

User selection

Eight users were tested overall. We attempted to select users with varying backgrounds, ages and technical ability. Our user group ended up being a reasonably varied bunch, including a foreign student, a senior citizen, a work-from-home mum, an IT professional, several non-IT professionals and an even gender balance.

Testing method & software

We decided it was best (and also easiest) to test people face to face in their own environments. Screen recording software was installed on laptops and they were taken to a neutral place where the test subject felt comfortable. Our chosen software for local screen recording was as follows:

An introductory script was read to the user to set the scene and familiarise themselves with the process.

We interchanged whether we started the user on the simple version or the tabbed version first. At the completion of whichever version they tried first, they were asked to go through the same process on the second version.

Outcomes

Simple version findings

Six users preferred the simple version, or at least did not use the tabbed version in a way that was any different to the simple version. They found it easy and intuitive and did not have trouble finalising the process.

Tabbed version findings

Only two users attempted the expected workflow of the tabs version, i.e. selecting multiple sources before filling in any details on individual sources. These users, however, did not notice the fact that the sources were appearing as separate tabs on the right as they clicked them. Therefore, the users got confused after completing the first source and tried to tick further sources on the left.

The unclear nature of the tabs styling severely affected the testing of this version. The two users that may have benefitted from the tabbed interface were unaware of its existence. Users who did not use the tabbed version as expected might have been more inclined to do so if they had noticed the tabs appearing on the right.

Process findings

The order in which users tried the two options did not seem to make a difference. This was contrary to our expectation of users showing bias towards their learned behaviour from the version they attempted first. Four users started with the simple version and four users started with the tabbed version. The two users who used the tabbed version in the intended manner both started with different versions. We would still alternate the starting point in the same way next time to ensure this did not become an issue.

Conclusion

Users commented on the ease with which they were able to complete the process via the simple screen flow. In addition, users clearly preferred or better understood the simple screen flow, regardless which version they were interacting with.

The additional complexity of the tabbed version added very little to the ease of completion and understanding of the process. Though the poor tab design ended up actually detracting from the ease with which users could complete the tabbed process, the ease with which users completed the simple version seems to negate the need to attempt to redesign and retest the tabbed version at this time.

Therefore, the simple screen is the preferable model and will be implemented as the default Edentiti single-screen offering.

Edentiti Joins ACT Government Business Delegation to Malaysia

In the week 14-17th June Edentiti joined five other ACT companies on a delegation to Kuala Lumpur. From Edentiti's point of view the visit was a great success and we will pursue the opportunity it has presented.

Being part of an official delegation gave us access to people and organisations we would normally never be able to approach. Austrade know what they are doing and had arranged a excellent program for us. The ACT Government provided financial assistance for which we are most appreciative. It also gave us access to the ACT Government which was also appreciated.

Our next step is to select a Malaysian partner organisation with whom to work. We would hope to have this arranged within a couple of months. We do not know how long before they will be able to sell Malaysian Electronic IDs but we should be able to get the technical side working within three months.

Going overseas was not in our immediate plan but the opportunity to join the delegation was too good to pass up.
